Guwahati: In a unique way to pay the nation’s gratitude to the war heroes and martyrs of the 1971 India Pakistan war, the Assam government on Saturday (April 23) honoured the 105 war veterans of the 1971 war from Assam. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, facilitated the war martyrs’ wives and families, war veterans and PoWs of the 1971 war.
Speaking on occasion, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said India can not be bowed down by any superpower of the world. He further said the government would never compromise on the country’s pride, honour, and security. He added that India is determined to go beyond its borders to defend the nation and wipe out terror. Rajnath Singh also said honouring the war heroes of the 1971 Indo-Pak war is a commendable job by the Assam government. He said this is an honour to all the nation’s war heroes.
Speaking on occasion, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said Assam had a special contribution to the Bangladesh liberal war. Several police officers of Assam and the state’s civil society were also involved in the 1971 war. He recalled how 4 IPS officers of Assam trained the Mukti Bahini in Bangladesh against the Pakistan Army and how the civil society of Assan helped the refugees of the neighbouring country. CM Dr Sarma said his government would do every possible work to help out the war heroes. The Assam government has introduced job reservations for family members of the war martyrs and reserved seats in medical colleges for their children.
