Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal welcomes the centre’s decision to reduce AFSPA

Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah, in a tweet, said the reduction in areas AFSPA is a result of the improved security situation and fast-tracked development works in the region.

Guwahati: Assam CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the union government for withdrawing the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) from most parts of Assam and other Northeastern states.

The CM said, “It is a bold and historic move by the central government. the CM asserted that it will herald a new era of peace in the North East.” He further said,” I wholeheartedly welcome Adarniya PM Shri @narendramodi ji’s decision to withdraw AFSPA from all areas of Assam barring 9 dists & 1 subdivision. Also convey my gratitude to HM Shri @AmitShah ji for this great move. Around 60% of the State’s area will now be free from AFSPA’s purview.”

Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal also lauds the centre’s decision to withdraw the AFSPA from different parts of North East. On the historic occasion of the government decision to reduce the area of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (PSW) and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal said, “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our visionary Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the Union Government took an important decision to reduce the area of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Assam, Manipur & Nagaland. This makes it evident that the peace in the Northeast has returned. Under the leadership of our Prime Minister, the region is now developing. With the unwavering commitment to bring peace & prosperity to all the eight states in the region, the Prime Minister has been successful in unlocking the vast potential of the Northeast with sheer hard work, focussed approach, and sustained effort. The peace achieved by the region has led various sectors of the region to secure unprecedented growth. With the peace coming back to the region, the people from all walks have reclaimed an opportunity to live their lives with respect. On behalf of every person of the Northeast, I extend heartfelt gratitude and thanks to our Prime Minister on this historic occasion. My sincere thanks to the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah ji for his effort towards achieving this milestone. The lasting peace in the region is because of the effort put in by the Home Minister under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modiji.”
