C. T. Ravi said Halal food is economic jihad, which means it is used like a jihad so that Muslims should not do business with others.

New Delhi: Amid calls from some groups to boycott 'Halal' meat, BJP national general secretary C. T. Ravi has termed Halal food as 'economic jihad'.

"Halal is an economic Jihad. It means that it is used like a jihad so that Muslims should not do business with others. It has been imposed. When they think that Halal meat should be used, what is wrong in saying that it should not be used?" Ravi told reporters.

There has been a flurry of messages on social media for the past few days in Karnataka, appealing to Hindus to shun Halal meat, especially after the Hindu New Year festival Ugadi. This new appeal has come close on the heels of the ban on Muslim vendors around temples during the Hindu religious fairs in some parts of Karnataka.

Ravi said the 'Halal meat' system has been designed in a planned way so that the products should be purchased only from Muslims and not others.

"When Muslims refuse to buy meat from Hindus, why should you insist on Hindus to buy from them? What right do people have to ask?," Ravi remarked.

Meanwhile, the JD (S) second-in-command H D Kumaraswamy held the Congress party accountable for the rise in communal politics in Karnataka.

The next round of assembly elections are due in Karnataka by May 2023.

The state is witnessing rows over socio-religious issues in more ways than one, including on the matter pertaining to the use of hijab by grown-up young women in educational institutions.

There was a murder of a Bajrang Dal activist, Harsha and post-murder, there were seven days of curfew in Shivamogga.
