The polling process in five states would be completed with this phase and the counting of votes will take place on March 10.

New Delhi: The last phase of polling for 54 seats in politically sensitive districts of Varanasi, Mirzapur, Azamgarh, Bhadohi, Chandauli, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Mau and Sonbhadra has begun Today (March 7).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had campaigned in the region, addressing a rally, staging roadshows and meeting common people between March 3 and 5. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed five public meetings, the highest by a BJP leader in Azamgarh, Sonbhadra and Bhadohi districts.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda also addressed rallies in Malhani and Bhadohi. The BJP also fielded Union Ministers Smriti Irani, Amethi MP, and Anurag Thakur to address a joint rally in the Chunar constituency of Mirzapur district. Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya also addressed rallies in Chandauli, Mau and Jaunpur.

The polling process in five states, UP, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa, would be completed with today's voting. The counting of votes will take place on March 10, though pollsters and others will also be keeping an eye on exit polls in these states on March 7 evening.

BJP national President J P Nadda met party general secretaries at the headquarters on Sunday and took stock of the situation.

The saffron party would soon start focusing on another major state assembly polls in Gujarat later this year. The BJP has been in power in the western Indian state for many years now. Another BJP ruled Himachal Pradesh will also go to the polls along with Gujarat later this year.

Significantly from the northeastern region point of view, the BJP has to gear up for polls in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland by February 2023. Karnataka will have polls in April-May 2023.

While the Lotus party will fight to retain power in onetime communist bastion Tripura, it will be ambitious to improve its performance in Nagaland and Meghalaya.
