After four and a half months of waiting, the first convoy of 50 trucks will start the delivery of 50,000 metric tons of wheat from India to Afghanistan.
New Delhi: The first convoy of 2500 MT of wheat assistance for Afghanistan people reached Jalalabad on Saturday (February 26) morning.
The 50 trucks convey despatched from ICP Attari on Wednesday travelled through Pakistan to Afghanistan, said Farid Mamundzay, Aghan envoy to India.
Authorities in Afghanistan would now be distributing this aid to thousands of needy families across Afghanistan. After four and a half months of waiting, the first convoy of 50 trucks will start the delivery of 2500 metric tons of wheat from India to Afghanistan.
"I thank the Indian government for the generosity displayed at a time when more than 20 million Afghans are facing crisis or the worse," the envoy tweeted.
India remains committed to its special relationship with the people of Afghanistan. In response to appeals made by the United Nations for humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, the Government of India has decided to gift 50,000 MT of wheat to the people of Afghanistan.
The supply was provided by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and transported from Attari (India) to Jalalabad (Afghanistan) by Afghan transporters, an official source said.
In a ceremony held in Amritsar on February 22, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, along with Afghan Ambassador Farid Mamundzay and World Food Program Country Director Bishaw Parajuli, flagged off the first convoy of 50 trucks carrying 2500 MT of wheat assistance from India to Afghanistan via Pakistan.
