New Delhi: BJP national president J P Nadda on Friday welcomed the verdict of the Supreme Court quashing the order of Maharashtra Speaker on suspension of 12 BJP MLAs.
In a series of tweets, he welcomed the verdict. "BJP always have taken up the fight on behalf of the people," he tweeted in Hindi
stating that the 12 legislators were taking up the struggle of the OBC people.
He also congratulated the 12 legislators and said the Shiv Sena-led coalition government has been functioning against the constitution and against democratic principles.
"…The BJP will continue to raise its voice against any unconstitutional acts by the Maharashtra government," he wrote.
The Supreme Court earlier in the day set aside the suspension of the 12 Maharashtra BJP MLAs from the Assembly for one year.
It said such an order was arbitrary, unconstitutional and illegal. A bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar said the MLAs cannot be suspended beyond the session.
Reinstating them, the court held that the resolutions are malice in the eyes of law, ineffective and “beyond the powers of the Assembly”. The 12 MLAs are Sanjay Kute, Ashish Shelar, Abhimanyu Pawar, Girish Mahajan, Atul Bhatkhalkar, Parag Alavani, Harish Pimpale, Yogesh Sagar, Jay Kumar Rawat, Narayan Kuche, Ram Satpute and Bunty Bhangdia.
They were suspended on July 5, 2021, after the state government accused them of “misbehaving” with presiding officer Bhaskar Jadhav in the Speaker’s chamber. “The Supreme Court judgment is a slap on the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi government’s face.
The suspension was an act of vendetta," BJP MLA Girish Mahajan said.
