A 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Misri served as India’s ambassador in Beijing during a challenging phase in relations between the two countries.
The Union government, on Monday (December 27), appointed career diplomat Vikram Misri as the new Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA).
A 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Misri, completed his ambassadorial tenure in China on December 11. He was India’s ambassador to China for almost three years and handled one of the most challenging phases of the relationship between the two countries.
He will succeed Pankaj Saran, former Indian envoy to Russia and Bangladesh, who demits office as Deputy NSA on December 31. Misri will work alongside two other deputies NSAs, Rajinder Khanna, Datta Padsalgikar, and will report to NSA Ajit Doval in the National Security Council Secretariat. Both Khanna and Padsalgikar are from an IPS background, as is NSA Doval.
Misri will officially take charge on January 1. An experienced hand, Misri had served thrice in the PMO in the past. He was private secretary to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from October 2012 to May 2014. Before moving out of the PMO, he also served as private secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi from May 2014 to July 2014. He also served as private secretary to Shri I K Gujral when serving as prime minister from April 1997 to March 1998.
Pradeep Kumar Rawat has been named the new Indian Ambassador to China. An Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1990 batch, Rawat is currently India’s ambassador to the Netherlands.
Misri has also served in important roles in various Indian missions in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America.
