Both leaders decided to form a border dispute management committee to resolve the border issues during their meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga held an important discussion at the residence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to resolve the border disputes between both states on Friday (November 26) night.
Both the chief ministers met for the first time after the violent border clash in July this year. Six Assam police personnel were killed in the clashes that took place in the Lailapur area on the interstate border.
The leaders decided to form two border dispute management committees by both states. These two committees will have cabinet ministers, top government officials, and, if needed, opposition party leaders as its members. Both the committees will meet from time to time to resolve the border disputes peacefully and amicably by discussions.
Home Minister Amit Shah advised the Chief Ministers to hold CM level discussions on border disputes as required. It should be mentioned that the centre wants Assam and Mizoram to resolve the border disputes through discussions by August 2022.
After the July 26 violent clashes on the interstate border, government-level talks between representatives of the two states decided to not have any "fresh deployment" in the disputed areas, and a joint statement was released. Several rounds of official level talks were held between both Assam and Mizoram.
The chief secretaries and DGPs of the two states on July 28 attended a meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla where the decision to deploy a neutral central force (CRPF) at the clashes site was taken. Assam and Mizoram share a 164-km-long border. After the meeting with the Union Home Minister, both the Chief Ministers said to resolve the dispute peacefully through discussions.
After the important meeting, the Assam chief minister said, "Heartening to share that I along with Hon Chief Minister Mizoram, Sri Zoramthanga met Hon Home Minister Shri Amit Shah this evening in New Delhi. We reaffirmed our resolve to maintain peace and tranquillity at our borders. It has been decided that both the states will constitute committees for resolving the border disputes through discussions. Towards this end, Chief Ministers' level talks will also take place from time to time. We are grateful to Union HM for his kind guidance and support."
