The Importance of Govardhan Puja

Devotees praise Shri Krishna for carrying the Govardhan Parvat on his little finger to save the villagers of Braj Bhoomi when Indra Dev unleashes heavy rains in a fit of fury. As a token of thanks, worshippers present the Lord and the Govardhan parvat with various culinary delicacies.

Chhapan Bhog, a tray containing 56 recipes, is also cooked and presented to the god in certain locations. Because the cuisine is served in the shape of a little mountain, it is also known as Annakut. Even today, worshippers in the Braj area circumambulate and pay tribute to the Govardhan Parvat.
