Imphal: The former national footballer and now CM of Manipur N Biren Singh is back on the football field again. This time MLAs and BJP party leaders are by his side. On Wednesday chief minister N Biren Singh played a football match against the Joint Tribal Council (JTC) team at Tamenglong district. Taking to Twitter CM Singh said, "It's always good to be back on the football pitch, what's even better is that, today's match is the first match to be played on the revamped natural grass football ground of Tamenglong.

With Hon'ble Ministers & MLAs on my team, a friendly match was played against the JTC team."

According to reports, CM Singh was only 18 years old then when he joined BSF and played for the forces after some officials of the BSF spotted him during a football match in Imphal. He was also the first football player from the state to have played outside Manipur. He played the final of the Durand Cup in 1981 for the BSF team and won the trophy by defeating JCT 1-0.

The then President of India Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was the chief guest in the final match. Chief Minister N Biren Singh a couple of years ago tweeted a photograph of the final match when they were introduced to the President of India.
