The Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh closed 5,000 madrasas in Uttar Pradesh after a detailed inquiry revealed the concerned madrasas were flouting multiple norms.
Suresh Jain, a member of the Uttar Pradesh Minority Commission, said many madrasas were not uploading the data in the Uttar Pradesh Madrasa Education Board portal. Uploading the data by madrasas is compulsory.
He added that the government would save over 100 crores by shutting illegal madrasas. The government would also emphasise on the development of Jain and Sikh community institutions.
The Organiser reported earlier that the SIT probing the fake madrasa cases in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh and Mirzapur had lodged FIR against 21 for running fake institutes and getting grants in crores from the government.
Many madrasas were approved without physical verification in 2009-10 when BSP’s Mayawati was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.
The madrasas in the Azamgarh and Mirzapur districts of the state existed only on paper.
Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2012-17. The scam was unearthed in 2017 when Yogi Adityanath became the chief minister in March 2017.
CM Yogi ordered an SIT probe in the matter. 250 madrasas in Azamgarh and 143 in Mirzapur were investigated.
After the scam came to light in 2017, the Yogi government had stopped the grant to these madrasas.
