Guwahati: In yet another encounter with criminals, Assam police killed an arms smuggler in Karimganj district on Monday night. Nurul Islam who allegedly tried to flee custody while he was taken for a search operation by police was killed in the encounter. Nurul Islam along with an aide was arrested on Monday in a joint operation by BSF and Karimganj police team. Police recovered a pen pistol and four 7.65mm pistols and four magazines from Islam.
According to the police sources, Nurul Islam, was being taken to Niralagaon in Badarpur on Monday night in search of one more of his accomplices and arms, when he allegedly tried to escape.
Police had to open fire on Islam, who died after sustaining bullet injuries. Karimganj police revealed that Nurul Islam was involved in arms smuggling racket.
Police sources further revealed that a strong network of arms smuggling rackets is active in bordering areas of Karimganj district. This racket smuggles small arms from neighbouring Bangladesh and supplies to criminals in Barak valley. BSF and Assam police now jointly increase the vigil to check this racket. Monday's operation was jointly carried out by BSF and Assam police. Karimganj police are now investigating the matter and looking for other accomplices of killed arms smuggler Nurul Islam.
