The killed dacoits are identified as Sirajuddola Sheikh from Mankachar, Aminul Sheikh and Manirul Sheikh from Goalpara district.

Guwahati: In yet another successful operation, Assam police gunned down three most wanted dacoits in Kokrajhar district on Sunday (August 22).

The robbers were shot dead by the police in the wee hours of Sunday when they were trying to rob a branch of the Allahabad Bank near Kokrajhar town. The killed dacoits are identified as Sirajuddola Sheikh from Mankachar, Aminul Sheikh and Manirul Sheikh from Goalpara district. ADGP L R Bisnoi told media that police on specific information ambushed near the bank branch. Six people came in that way in a tempo at around 2.30 a.m. When the police team asked them to stop the vehicle, they didn't stop. The police team followed them, and when the police repeatedly sought to stop the dacoits, they opened fire on the police. The police team had to retaliate. The firing continued for almost 30 minutes. Bisnoi added that in retaliatory fire by police, three dacoits from nearby districts were injured & later succumbed in the hospital.

Police recovered vehicles, tools, gas cutters, two pistols and bullets, and Oxygen Cylinders from the gang, and three dacoits fled during the firing. Police said the gang is involved in many robberies in the BTR area, and they had the information that 25 to 30 lakhs cash was there in the bank branch.

With this fresh encounter, the total number of accused shot dead by the Assam Police since May 10 has risen to 20. On the other hand, 30 more have sustained bullet injuries at the same time.

ADGP Bisnoi further said, “I want to appeal to all the dacoits and their associates in the BTR area today to leave this road of crimes and if they want to reform themselves, then we will help them. But if they continue to do crimes, then police will be bound to take stern action against them.”
