Muzaffar Wani, the father of slain Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani, hoisted the tricolour at a school in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district as part of Independence Day celebrations on Sunday (August 15).

Muzaffar Wani, who is the principal of the school, unfurled the tricolour on the premises of the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Tral.

His son, Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani, was killed in an encounter with security forces in July 2016 in South Kashmir.

As part of the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav', the Jammu-Kashmir administration has directed all departments, including the education department, to ensure that flag hoisting is held in all the offices on Independence Day.

On August 5, 2019, the Union government revoked the Article 370 of the Constitution which granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised as Union territory of Jammu-Kashmir and Union territory of Ladakh.
