Gauhar Raza, who had expressed his sympathies for terrorist Afzal Guru and Apoorvanand, DU professor whose role was suspected in Delhi riots, were among the speakers.

The Harisingh Gour Central University at Sagar in Madhya Pradesh pulled out of a webinar when the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad protested against some anti-national participation.

The two-day webinar on ‘Culture and Linguistic Hurdles in the Achievement of Scientific Temper’ that the anthropology department was to be co-hosted with Montclair State University, US, on July 30 and 31, went ahead as scheduled, without Dr Harisingh Gour Central University as convenor.

The ABVP protested, saying Apoorvanand’s role was found suspicious in the Delhi riots, and he has been questioned for the same. Gauhar Raza has written a poem, ‘Ajmal Prem’, for terrorist Afzal Guru who was convicted and sentenced to death by the Supreme Court.

It has also submitted a complaint to the city police about the webinar. The city police wrote to the university vice-chancellor, asking the organisers to ensure religious and caste sentiments are not hurt.

“While the letter objecting to the seminar was from one particular organisation, we had our own intelligence reports which stated that many others were uncomfortable with the webinar. It was being perceived as targeting a particular caste or community and with this in mind, the letter was written asking the organisers to be cautious as the webinar is a public platform,” The Indian Express quoted the SP Atul Singh.
