The 2-day workshop will give participants an opportunity to learn more about Bharatanatyam.
Hindu Youth New Zealand and Grandiose – The Creative Company are proud to bring a beautiful Bharatanatyam Workshop to Rotorua. Bharatanatyam is regarded as one of the most ancient Indian classical dances and originates from the southern part of India. The origins of this ancient dance form can be traced back to the text on performing arts titled ‘Natya Shastra’.
The 2-day workshop will give participants an opportunity to learn more about Bharatanatyam, be introduced to basic movements as well as learn a short dance. The workshop will be taking place on the 10th and 11th of July 2021 from 2pm to 4pm at the Lakes Performing Arts Centre. Ms. Athulya Mohan, who is an accomplished Indian classical dancer will be conducting the workshop and sharing her knowledge with the participants. “I feel a spiritual connection to Rotorua, and I am looking forward to sharing this beautiful artform with the Rotorua community” said Miss Mohan.
Hindu Youth New Zealand (HYNZ) is collaborating with various art and dance groups to bring traditional, classical and folk dances of India to the New Zealand public through workshops and cultural programs. “We are extremely pleased to work with the Hindu Youth New Zealand (HYNZ) to raise awareness of the Indian classical dance forms and to make it accessible to more kiwis” added Miss Mohan.
Bharatanatyam brings together bhava (emotions), raga (melody) and tala (rhythm) and the dancer expresses all these three parts to depict a story through dance movements. This artform was practiced and performed in temples and has since later expanded to theatre and other platforms. Bharatanatyam has become a global dance form and dancers from various ethnicities and backgrounds also practice this art.
There are numerous benefits of practicing Bharatanatyam including improved flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular stamina. It improves muscle health, and improve concentration, balance and mindfulness.
