Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi rejoices the essence of the ecosystem

Guwahati: Synchronizing with the World Environment Day on 5 June, Assam Governor professor Jagdish Mukhi carried out a plantation drive at Raj Bhavan in the city and appealed to everybody in State to plant saplings to increase the green coverage on Earth making it more habitable for the future generation.

State chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma also planted 11 Rudraksha saplings at Gandhi Mandap on this auspicious occasion and urged all sections in the society to contribute towards environment protection following Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of cleanliness. Sarma directed the concerned department to enhance the site as a learning place for the young generation about Gandhi’s life and teachings.

Lauding the State forest department for its relentless efforts to get reforested 10 thousand hectares of land, Sarma also informed that 28 bio-diversity parks named Sahitya Manisi Upaban are being set up in 28 districts. Later he attended another program at Basistha garbage campus and distributed 12 auto tippers to non-government organisations, engaged in garbage collection in the city.

“Our existence is dependent on our environment. It is a matter of great satisfaction that United Nations since 1972, used the World Environment Day to encourage awareness among all stakeholders and the public in general to champion the cause of environment,” said Governor Mukhi on the occasion.

Going along with the theme set for the celebration of the auspicious day this year as ecosystem restoration, Prof Mukhi also requested everybody to celebrate it in introspection and taking the pledge to protect the environment and contribute in every possible way to safeguard the essence of the ecosystem.

Along with the conscious people representing various conservation groups, the specific day was celebrated on the premises of the State legislative assembly too, where saplings of Nahor, Bokul, Arjun, Debadaru, etc were planted by assembly’s deputy speaker Dr Nomal Momin, leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia with other distinguished guests.
