Eminent citizens including retired High Court judges, Bureaucrats, Diplomats and Army veterans Monday submitted a memorandum to President Ram Nath Kovind and the Chief Justice of India N V Ramana asking for a Special Investigation Team to investigate post-poll violence in West Bengal.
They have also requested that SIT be headed by a retired Supreme Court judge.
The memorandum further states “since West Bengal is a sensitive border state, we request that these cases should be handed over to NIA to deal with the anti-national onslaught on the culture and integrity of the country.”
More than 25 BJP members and RSS volunteers had lost their lives in the post-poll violence unleashed by the TMC cadre.
The memorandum states “Recent targeted political killings and bloodshed after the State Assembly elections in West Bengal highlight the need for every right-thinking citizen to observe nonviolence at all costs and respect a democratic process which inherently rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation.”
It further states that more than 15000 violent incidents have been reported which has badly affected 16 of the 23 districts of West Bengal.
About 5000 people were forced to flee to other states to save their lives.
The Mamata Banerjee administration made every attempt to stop Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar from visiting violence affected areas.
He not only visited the violence affected areas in West Bengal but also visited the camp in Assam where people are living after fleeing the violence in the state.
The 146 signatories to the memorandum included 17 retired judges, 32 IPS officers, 31 IAS officers, 10 Ambassadors and 56 Army veterans.
Former Ambassador Bhaswati Mukherjee and Former Maharashtra DGP Praveen Dixit submitted the memorandum with the list of the signatories.
