Guwahati: After reviewing the Covid-19 situation in Barpeta district of western Assam, State chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the government is setting up a 15 bedded Covid-ICU at Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed medical college hospital with 50 numbers of oxygen concentrators.

Visiting the government medical institution on Thursday, CM Sarma asserted that though the positivity rate in the Barpeta district is not alarming, the death rate there is a cause of concern. He asked the district administration to intensify corona-tests to ascertain the Covid-19 status of the residents.

CM Sarma categorically stated that home isolation for the Covid-19 positive cases above 50 years of age would be stopped. He claimed that if all the districts astutely adhere to the preventive measures prescribed by the government, the situation in the State would improve within 15 days.

In the presence of FAAMCH principal Dr RamenTalukdar, Barpeta district magistrate and police chief and top health officials, Sarma, who was in charge of State health ministry under Sarbananda Sonowal’s cabinet, emphasised senior doctors’ availability in the Cocid-19 wards all the time for the benefit of patients. Recently, Sarma visited Tezpur medical college hospital to take stock of the Covid-19 scenario in the Sonitpur district of eastern Assam. He instructed the TMCH authority to ensure the service of senior doctors in the rank of associate professor, assistant professor or registrar during the night hours to reduce the mortality of critical corona patients.

CM Sarma even stated that he would personally make video calls to the doctors on duty after midnight. He directed the district administration to take all necessary initiative to support the low-income families staying in containment zones. At the same time, Sarma announced that the administration would bear the cost of transportation to Covid-19 patients from death beds to the cremation ground and the cremation.

In the presence of Parliamentarians Pallab Lochan Das, Tapan Kumar Gogoi, legislators Prithwiraj Rabha, Ganesh Limbu, Krishna Kamal Tanti, responsible government officials, Sama stated that there is no scarcity of doctors in the State, and dedicated service would be provided to corona patients round the clock.
