V Muraleedharan, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, said the level of violence by the ruling party in West Bengal was such that even the BJP MLAs were not safe in the state.
He added the results of Assam and West Bengal were declared simultaneously but there was political violence only in West Bengal.
The minister appealed for the restoration of human rights, law & order and democratic values in West Bengal.
He was speaking in a webinar “State Sponsored Targeted Violence and Human Rights Crisis in West Bengal”
organised by Centre for South Indian Studies and People for Justice Trust Thursday.
Last week, the minister’s car was attacked by the TMC cadre in West Bengal when he had gone there to take stock of the situation.
In the political violence since the results were declared on May 2, more than 25 BJP members and RSS volunteers have lost their lives.
The ruling TMC even tried to stop Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar from visiting the violence affected areas. He has been visiting the violence affected areas since Thursday.
Speaking in the same webinar, political analyst Debjani Bhattacharya said the so-called minorities in West Bengal were no more minorities and their status should be redefined, said political analyst Debjani Bhattacharya.
The 2200-km long open border with Bangladesh is one of the major causes of demographic change and instability in West Bengal, she added.
Priyanka Tibrewal, advocate of the Supreme Court and Calcutta High Court, said not only the police remained mute spectators during the violence, it had also submitted false affidavits about the violence in the Calcutta High Court.
The Calcutta High Court had constituted a five-judge bench to hear about the post poll violence cases in the state.
