The Congress party in Assam has lost all its credibility by aligning with Badruddin Ajmal’s All India United Democratic Front, said Bharatiya Janata Party’s Himanta Biswa Sarma Thursday.

He further added the Congress party had lost huge ground by participating in the 1983 “illegal elections” and it took them years to regain that ground.

This time, by aligning with the AIUDF, they have committed a bigger mistake and it would take them at least 30 years to recover the lost ground.

The Congress party contested the just concluded Assam assembly elections in alliance with Maulana Badruddin Ajmal’s AIUDF.

The counting of the votes for the 126-seats Assam assembly will start on May 2.

The BJP captured power in Assam in 2016 after 15 long years of Congress’ rule. The NDA had won 82 seats of the states’126 seats. Himanta Biswa Sarma, a tall leader of the Congress party and a confidante of then Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, resigned from Congress in 2015 and joined the BJP.

One of the most popular leaders in the North-East, Sarma campaigned in nearly all the seats in Assam polls. He ducked the question about chief ministership by saying the party’s parliamentary board would take a call on this.

Sarma was in an interview with Republic TV’s Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami.
