With the Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad shooting off the letter to the Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, asking for his recommendation for the next CJI, the process for the appointment of the next CJI has kicked off.
Justice NV Ramana is in line to be the next CJI but the procedure demands that the Union Law Minister formally ask for the incumbent’s recommendation.
The procedure is guided by the Memorandum of Procedure for Appointment of Chief Justice of India.
Born in Andhra Pradesh, Justice Ramana became a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in June 2000. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in February 2014.
The incumbent CJI, Justice SA Bobde, is retiring on April 23. Justice Ramana will have a tenure of about 16 months.
The President of the Republic of India appoints the CJI on the advice of the Prime Minister.
