The Bharatiya Janata Party government in Haryana comfortably defeated the no-confidence motion brought by the opposition Congress party Wednesday.
Fifty members of the ruling coalition voted against the motion. The opposition could secure only 32 votes, 30 of the Congress and two independents.
Despite all the brouhaha created in the name of farmers’ protest, all the 10 MLAs of JJP supported the government. The JJP has its support base in the Jat farmers’ community of the state.
The two most vocal critics of the new farm laws, Ram Kumar Gautam and Devinder Babli, both JJP MLAs, voted in favour of the government.
The Jannayak Janta Party of the Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala is a coalition partner of the BJP in Haryana. It has 10 MLAs.
Congress has brought the no-confidence motion hoping the JJP will vote against the government.
The effective current strength of the Haryana assembly is 88 (two seats are vacant) and 45 was needed to defeat the motion. The BJP has a strength of 40 in the House.
Punjab and Haryana have seen protests against the three progressive farm laws passed by the Union government. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the leader of the Congress party in Haryana, was hoping to capitalise on the farmers’ anger.
