Guwahati: As the model code of conduct comes into force across Assam ahead of State Legislative Assembly elections, the district authorities have removed a number of banners, posters and hoardings in various parts including the pre-historic city of Guwahati. Within two days, the administration removed over 50,925 banners & hoardings and over 73,400 posters. Moreover, a large area was whitewashed across the State.
Meanwhile, the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) remains confident of winning the polls scheduled for 27 March, 1 and 6 April next, where the main opposition party Indian National Congress is also upbeat with the entry of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) in its grand alliance comprising AIUDF, CPI, CPM, CPI(ML), Anchalik Gana Morcha etc.
BPF leader Hagrama Mohilary declared that his party has ended a political alliance with the BJP and joined hands with the Congress-led Mohajoat. The relationship with BJP leaders went sour for Mohilary during the Bodoland territorial council polls, where BPF own 17 out of 40 BTC seats. But the ruling BJP preferred to abandon Mohilary’s party while forming the council, headquartered in Kokrajhar. Congress Parliamentarian Gaurav Gogoi welcomed Mohilary’s decision to snap ties with the saffron party and renewed its trust in the oldest political party of India. The grand alliance now looks for 12 Assembly constituencies inside Bodoland territorial region in western and northern Assam. Mohilary’s party had three ministers in Sarbananda Sonowal-led government in Dispur and they all are resigning.
Meanwhile, BJP Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia commented that his party would seek people’s supports on the basis of developmental works. He also stated that BJP would continue political ties with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in the forthcoming polls and win over 100 seats out of 26 Assembly constituencies.
Another political front has emerged in Assam with the newly formed two ultra regional political parties namely Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP), led by former All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi, and Raijor Dol led by peasant activist Akhil Gogoi, who remains behind bars since December 2019 on sedition charges. Both the young leaders are also expected to fight the polls.
