The sudden demand for desi dog breeds like Chippippara, Rajapalayam, Mudhol Hound, Kombai, Kanni, Bulli Kutha has caught everybody by surprise. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Mann Ki Baat program had mentioned about the importance of domesticating Indian dog breeds. Following this request, people started purchasing and domesticating varieties of dog that are best suited for the Indian conditions, unlike the foreign ones. Now, even the military and the other security forces are training Indian breeds for operation purposes.
The most sought out desi dog breed is Chippippara native to Tamil Nadu. This dog is well known for affection towards its owner and now a puppy costs Rs 20,000. Chippippara’s eyes are positioned in a way that it provides a vision of 270 degrees. It has a strong body which is effective for hunting and requires only minimum food since it has a shorter stomach. Due to the surge in demand, people have to wait up to 6 months to procure a desi breed of their choice. The credit for creating this demand goes to PM Modi, who made people aware of domestic dog breeds and helping dog breeders to earn additional income during the time of uncertainty created by COVID-19.
