
A shikara, carrying BJP workers and mediapersons, capsised in Dal Lake on Sunday during an election campaign for the ongoing District Development Council elections, officials said.
According to eyewitnesses, the shikara carrying BJP workers and mediapersons capsised near Ghat no. 17 adjacent to Chaar Chinary just as it was about to reach the bank of the Dal Lake in Srinagar. The incident took place towards the end of the rally.
The BJP workers and journalists were rescued by locals, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel and police.
The shikara rally was led by Union Minister Anurag Thakur, who is the BJP’s in-charge for DDC elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Tarun Chug and Shahnawaz Hussain were also present in the rally.
Anurag Thakur is the BJP’s in-charge for the DDC elections in J&K. Local leaders, including Sofi Yousuf and Altaf Thakur were also present.
The DDC elections are the first major political activity in J&K since the Abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019
