Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla has announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will perform Bhumi Pujan of India’s new parliament building on December 10. The new parliament building will be constructed on an area of 64,500 square metres and is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 971 crore. The new building will be earthquake resistant and around 2,000 workers will be directly involved in its construction while 9,000 will be indirectly involved.
“The existing temple of democracy is completing 100 years. It is a matter of pride for our countrymen that the new one will be built by our own people as a prime example of Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” Birla said here announcing details of the new proposed building. “The new building will showcase the cultural diversity of the country. Hopefully, in the 75th year of independence, Parliament session will be held in the new building,” he said.
As per rules, the Lok Sabha speaker is the custodian of the parliament building. A formal invitation was extended to the Prime Minister by Om Birla on Saturday. The newly constructed parliament building will have separate office rooms for all MPs and will be equipped with the latest digital interfaces as a step towards making ‘paperless office’. There will be a grand constitutional hall to showcase India’s democratic heritage, a library, a lounge, dining areas, parking space and multiple committee rooms within the parliament premise.
The Lok Sabha chamber will have seating space for 888 members, while Rajya Sabha will have a seating capacity of 384. In September this year, Tata Projects Limited won the bid to construct the new parliament building at a cost of Rs 861.90 crore. The new building will be constructed close to the existing one under the Central Vista redevelopment project.
