Guwahati: Assam remembers Jananeta Bhimbor Deori, one of the most prominent leaders of the region who fought bravely against the British imperialist forces, where State chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal takes the lead in paying tributes to the leader, who played a pivotal role alongside Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi in keeping Assam as an integral part of India at the time of India at the time of country’s independence.

A lawyer by profession Bhimbor Deori (May 16, 1903 – November 30, 1947) was an influential leader in the pre-independence era who raised voices for political including land rights to various indigenous Assamese communities. He devoted much of his in the services of the inferior, backward tribal, indigenous races, etc. and hence Bhimbar Deuri was lovingly called as Jananeta (people’s leader).

Addressing a public function at Narayanpur HS School in Lakhimpur district on the occasion of Bhimbar Deuri Divas to mark the 73rd death anniversary of the illustrious son of northeast India, Sonowal asserted that the young generation should study his life to follow the Jananeta’s footsteps and contribute visibly in building a healthy and vibrant Assam.

Stating education as the cornerstone for the progress of society, Sonowal said that the youth must remain steadfast in their pursuit of knowledge to shine in life. He revealed that the government since its beginning was making all-out efforts to make education accessible and affordable with various schemes like waiving admission fee, examination fee, free uniforms, offers for scholarships, subsidy on education loan, etc.

Vey few people knows that, it was due to Bhimbor Deori’s adminstrative and diplomatic strategies he was able to convince british to merge Assam with India.

Highlighting the State government’s move to immortalise the contributions of leading figures from different communities, Sonowal informed that steps were taken for building a memorial park in the name of Bhimbor Deori at Sadiya in Tinsukia district. He, in presence of State minister Naba Kumar Doley, cultural affairs director BK Bora, Parliamentarian PL Das, legislator Devananda Hazarika etc., urged people to extend all cooperation in materialising this initiative of the government.
