Landslide in Kerala: Death toll in Idukki landslide rises to 21, Prime Minister announces ex-gratia

A day after a landslide due to heavy rain in Kerala’s Idukki, at least 20 people were killed and several feared buried under the debris. The rescue operation at the site has been stopped due to bad weather.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of 2 lakh rupees each from PMNRF to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to a landslide in Rajamalai, Idukki district. He said in a tweet that 50 thousand rupees each would be given to those injured due to the landslide.
PM Modi tweeted, “Pained by the loss of lives due to a landslide in Rajamalai, Idukki. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover quickly. NDRF and the administration are working on the ground, providing assistance to the affected.”
According to reports, more than 50 people are reported to be missing. Heavy rain is continuing across the State for the last two days. Major rivers are overflowing and low lying regions are flooded. The IMD has predicted that heavy rain will continue for the next two days in Idukki and Wayanad.
