In a knee-jerk reaction to the startling revelation of ousted Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, the Pak Military has called a national security meeting. The top-level meeting is to be held on May 14. In a tweet, the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said: “NSC meeting suggested to Prime Minister [Shahid Khaqan Abbasi] to discuss recent misleading media statement regarding Bombay incident. Being held tomorrow morning.”
In an interview with Pakistan newspaper The Dawn, Nawaz Sherif had admitted the role of Pakistan in the attacks on November 26, 2008. He said, “Militant organisations are active. Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai? Explain it to me. Why can’t we complete the trial?”
Backed by a range of corroborating evidence, India had exposed the Pakistani hand in the attack and accused Hafiz Saeed, the mastermind, and Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba of carrying out the attacks. India has always maintained that the LeT terrorists sailed into Mumbai coast from Karachi to carry out the attack and it was coordinated by the Pak spy agency ISI. In the attacks launched by 10 armed terrorists, 166 people were killed and many people were injured.
Contradicting the official stand of Islamabad, this is the first time that former Pakistani Prime Minister has admitted his country’s role in the 26/11 attacks. However, the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) said the former prime minister”s remarks in the interview have been misinterpreted by the Indian media and a section of the Pakistani media.
