“They lynched my son in front of me. They killed him only because he was a BJP worker.” Sulochana, the mother of Sujith, said on a brink of weep. A group of assailants stormed into our house and attacked us. She tried to raise her hand but she couldn’t. The plasters were removed just a few days ago. Sujith’s brother Jayesh is still under treatment and his right hand is still plastered. When other three suffered serious injuries, Sujith succumbed to death on the spot.
It was this year on February 16, the family was attacked by CPM goons. In that gruesome attack, the old parents lost their young son. Sujith’s father said he was brutally beaten and thrown into a corner by attackers. The exceedingly feeble old man could not resist them anymore. “I called the police immediately. But soon after that, I was knocked down by a thug. After that, I don’t know what happened. It was a complete blackout.”
“My elder son and I tried our level best to stop them. They hit Jayesh very badly and when I tried to stop them from killing my son, they thrashed me and broke my hand,” helpless mother said.
Jayesh gave an account of what really happened on that dreadful night, “It was around 11 pm. We were about to go to sleep after watching TV. Suddenly I heard some noise outside. So I went outside. In the darkness, a man patted on my shoulder and muttered ‘slowly and silently’, thinking that I was one among his group. I was alarmed. They attacked our house and created an atmosphere of terror. They brutally thrashed my brother. He was lynched terribly.”
The mother said, after finishing his schooling, he was working as a spray painter. He was very efficient and capable of doing anything. He was only 26 years old.
“He was threatened by CPM local leaders years ago. Within four years, several murder attempts were made against him,” a neighbour remembers. A group of CPM goons visited at least four houses in this area on the previous day. It was a planned murder, a villager reiterated.
“We know all the members of that gang. I still remember very clearly that it was Lijesh who broke my hand. You know, it was my son Sujith who donated blood to Lijesh’s father when he was hospitalised after an accident,” mother’s voice scattered in the middle of conversation.
“All of them were drunk. I came out after hearing a loud noise. The attackers were running away from the spot. When I tried to stop them, I got a heavy blow on my back ” their next door neighbour said. Neither Jayesh nor his father is physically fit for doing job. Now the family is supported by a group of philanthropists with RSS background. n
