Mission( I ) ( m ) possible?

(Organiser, 5.10.2014);This refers to the front page story of Organiser ‘Mission (I) (m ) possible?’ by Madhu Deolekar. Mobilising government machinery for creating awareness about the urgency of increasing physical sanitation is a positive step. But sustaining this cleanliness drive and ensuring that it becomes a national trait requires more substantial interventions. A major responsibility lies with the parents and the teachers who groom the young generation. Cleanness has to be emphasised right from the childhood to make it a cultural thing. But cleanliness also means cleansing our mental and spiritual thoughts and throwing away the garbage of hatred which divides people on the basis of caste and creed, religion and region. Let us hope PM Narendra Modi will soon push a healthy mindset.

Paradoxical situation
The present day situation in Afghanistan can indeed be described as a paradoxical one. Thirteen years ago, when the allied forces of western powers entered that country to tackle the Talibani menace, it was labelled as an “imperialistic” invasion by occupation armies. Now, more than one and half decade later, when they are leaving on their own after finishing the task, they are being requested to stay on for some more time.

Throw history-sheeters out
The Supreme Court’s suggestion that the Prime Minister should take a moral call on inducting in the Cabinet politicians with police cases pending against them is one more step on the part of the highest judicial authority of the country to check criminalisation of politics. Bharat has the dubious distinction of electing people’s representatives with criminal charges. During the Lok Sabha elections PM Shri Narendra Modi had promised that he would end criminalisation of politics and have all pending trials expedited through fast-track courts. It is not simply a question of removing ministers facing criminal cases. Parliament cannot be a haven for history-sheeters .

Modi’s effect on Economy
The economy grew 5.7 per cent in April – June quarter, above expectations and at the fastest pace in two years. The pattern of growth was heartening : manufacturing , mining and electricity supply all grew . Most indicators now show an economy that is recovering from a three year slide and recent ross Domestic Product (GDP) data confirmed the trend. Challenges , however , remain such as the impact of deficient rainfall on the current agricultural season.

The Ultimate Saviours
On the front cover of Organiser dt.21.9.2014, it is stated that “The same armed forces, who were targeted by the separatists in the Valley , turned out to be the ultimate saviours for the people during Jammu and Kashmir floods.” Throwing stones on our armed forces by the mobs in Kashmir Valley has been a common phenomenon .Credit goes to our armed forces for helping those who were attacking them. It is yet to be seen, whether attitude of the Muslims in the Valley changes or not. In all probability, it may have some soothing effect for a short period, but ultimately the Muslims are likely to start the same dirty game of stone throwing and attacking our armed forces. In fact this has been the fact if we see their past history. Here it may be added that Dr B R Ambedkar writes on page 147 of his book Pakistan or the Partition of India giving reference of The Times of India dated 30.11.1927, that for the soul of Abdul Rashid, hanged to death by the British for murdering Swami Shraddhanand “students and professors of college of Deoband finished five complete recitations of Koran to give him place in heaven.

Gandhi surname no longer appeals

Though we all know that change is inevitable, it is still the hardest thing to accept. Congress is facing the problem now. After their worst defeat ever many leaders in the party have started accepting that their time-tested formulas do not work any more. Kamal Nath and Gourav Gogoi are the isolated cases. It is also good that today’s voters are demanding accountability from their representatives. This has completely changed the dimensions of politics. The winners will be those who accept this change and the rest will have nowhere to hide. Though out-of-the-box thinking is the only solution for the Congress, the party still hitches its fortunes to the Gandhi surname whose appeal has passed its expiry date.
