Intro: Sreedhareeyam is a unique Ayurvedic hospital and training institute specialised in eye care and treatment with 400 years’ Ayurveda medical heredity. ?
Sreedhareeyam Ayurveda Eye Hospital & Research Centre, Koothattukulam, Ernakulam district, Kerala, is a unique Ayurveda hospital specialised in eye care and treatment. It is the part and parcel of Nellikkattu Mana, a traditional Namboothiri Brahmin family with 400 years’ Ayurveda medical heredity. It is 45 kms off from Kochi International Airport. Even though Sreedhareeyam had a humble beginning, now they are spreading to different parts of the country. The flagship hospital in Koothattukulam is equipped with 400 beds. Fifteen beds in the new venture in Kochi. There are hospitals in Jaipur, Bengaluru and Vishakhapatanam with inpatient facilities. Hospitals in Chennai, Hyderabad, Jharkhand, Jamshedpur and Bilaspur are treating outpatients.
Now, the show is run by Chairman NP Narayanan Namboothiri and MD & Chief Physician Dr NPP Namboothiri. MD is PG holder in Ayurvedic ophthalmology. He was in Government of Kerala service for three decades and retired as District Medical Officer (Ayurveda).
Sreedhareeyam manufactures the medicines of their requirements in their own factory in Thodupuzha, close to Koothattukulam. They are growing the necessary medicinal herbs for this purpose. It spreads in 20 acres. On top of this, Seedhareeyam has got a farm with 40 cows and about 50 goats for using their products to manufacture several medicines. Their medicine factory is manned by more than 100 workers. Manufactured medicines are tested at their own GMP certified lab before bottling and dispatching to the hospital pharmacy.

Sreedhareeyam has accepted the following as their mottos:-

  • Research and development in the field of Ayurvedic ophthalmology.
  •  Imparting training to the future Ayurvedic practitioners.
  • Philanthropic activities for “Vision for the visionless”.

Sreedhareeyam has so far bagged the following honours:-

  • Centre of Excellence from union government; they get research funds for 5 years in this regard.
  • Recognition by National Accreditation Board of Hospitals.
  • Title of “Guru” from the union government.?

Captains of Sreedhareyam believe that Vision is God’s greatest gift to the mankind. We see and enjoy the beauty of this world only because of our eyes. Eyes need special care as they are the most delicate organ in the human body. Obviously Sreedhareeyam concentrates in this area. They are specialized in diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, detachment of retina, hyperaemia retinae, retinitis simplex, dazzling of retina, retinitis leukaemia, retinitis haemorrhagia, retinitis apoplastice, retinitis syphilitica, anaemia of retinae, embolus of the centralise retina, hyperaesthesia of retina, commotio retinae, glioma of retina, myopic degeneration, etc.
Sreedhareeyam has a training institute where young are trained in Ayurvedic tradition of the institution. They have been running a government recognized nursing school since 2006. Their research centre has got sophisticated lab facilities. Here well trained and qualified people are engaged in recreating ancient medicinal methods and creating new formulations.
Sreedhareeyam has got an impressively large collection of ancient manuscripts describing various medicinal preparations and Ayurveda treatment methodologies. These ancient palm leaves with inscriptions in old Malayalam and Tamil had been collected by the ancestors of Nellikkattu Mana. All are in the process of digitalization.
Sreedhareeyam also offers traditional Ayurvedic treatments like pizhichil, njavarakkizhi, steam kizhi, etc.
Dr NPP Namboothiri told Organiser that they are proud of their successful missions. This success spreads their reputation afar skies and miles. So, noted personalities accept them as the safe and trustworthy protectors of their eyes and vision. Doctor is proud to tell the weekly that Justice VR Krishna Iyer is their regular visitor for availing the treatment.?
