ABVP Protests Against Reduction Of MBBS Seats?
Terming the decision of Medical Council of India (MCI) reducing 1,650 MBBS seats in Karnataka and over 19,000 seats in the country as unfair, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)— student wing of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a protest march in Hubli, Karnataka on June 13.

Unfortunately, Karnataka Government is not safeguarding the interest of poor meritorious students who aspire to become doctors. ABVP has requested MCI to revive its decision keeping in view of poor student’s struggle for existence. Siddu Salimutt, Hubli City Secretary of ABVP said, “MCI is shrinking 250 MBBS seats in Government Colleges and 1,400 seats in private colleges in Karnataka citing poor infrastructure, inadequate laboratories and shortage of faculty. This has been done despite of the fact that Government in its budget has reserve funds of crores of rupees for developing infrastructure for education sector. Callous attitude of the Government is solely responsible for merit students from poor families losing their chance of pursuing medical career.”ABVP in a statement said, Government which spends crores of rupees for renovating Minister’s residence fails to provide basic infrastructure at Government Colleges and it is a matter of shame that MCI has cancelled 100 seats in Government colleges and lacks in basic facilities. .ABVP has urged the Government to look into the matter with a sense of responsibility and help the poor students by fulfilling conditions of MCI. Reliable sources revealed that a seat for MBBS in prestigious colleges in Bengaluru under management quota is going for a donation between rupees 60 to 70 lakh. In other colleges across the State the donation is ranging between rupees 30 to 40 lakh. This is excluding tuition fees, hostel charges, other recurring expenses and examination fees.The decision of MCI and apathy of Karnataka Government is adversely affecting the future of promising students who cannot afford huge donations.
