Communal clashes. UP tops the list

After showing a decline over the last few years, communal clashes are on the rise in the country. Preliminary data with the union home ministry shows between October 2011 and June 2012, there is a ten per cent increase in communal clashes. Increase has been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, UP, MP, West Bengal. In UP, reason for communal clashes is eve- teasing, rape, molestation, elopement, cross community marriages. The intelligence agencies have reported rumours of “love jehad” being spread in some parts of the country where radicalised youth are trying to lure and entrap Hindu girls . Uttar Pradesh has reported the highest number of communal incidents in the last three years. UP topped the list reporting 364 incidents of communal clashes killing 66 persons and injuring 1298 persons between 2009 and 2011. Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka also reported high number of incidents of communal clashes.
