Shouting the slogans and holding placards saying, ‘Save Assam Today, Save India Tomorrow’, ‘Our Land, Our Identity’, and ‘Detect, Delete, Deport Bangladeshi Infiltrators’, thousands of students from North-East and activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and some other organisations protested at Jantar Mantar on August 18 against the SMS threats issued to North-East people in several parts of the country.
The protestors demanded immediate action against the culprits who issued threats. “We want the government to punish them for such threats and arrest the culprits to ensure that we are safe,” a student said. “We strongly condemn the attacks and threats to North-East students across cities. RSS has deployed party members at railway stations and public places to ensure safety of students,” said ABVP State secretary Rohit Chahal. He said we have started a 24×7 helpline for them at Delhi University campus. “This helpline is not restricted to Delhi University students but any student from North-East who needs help can call on the numbers. We assure immediate action as we have given personal mobile numbers as helpline numbers,” added Shri Debarun Baruah, convenor North-East cell of the ABVP. The demonstration, staged under the banner of Rashtriya Chetna Manch, was led by Swami Raghwanand, Moh. Afzal of Rashtriya Muslim Manch, Shri Gujaral of Rashtriya Sikh Sangat, Shri Abhimanyu Hazarika of North-East Sanstha, Shri Rashtra Prakash of VHP, Shri Jaibhagwan Chauhan of Hindu Manch and Akhil Bharatiya Sahsampark Pramukh of RSS Shri Ram Madhav. Addressing the protestors Shri Ram Madhav said the rumour created panic among the students from North-East and the Government failed to arrest the elements behind it. He said the situation is Assam is going out of control due to uncontrolled influx of Bangladeshi infiltrators. Demanding stern action against the anti-national elements spreading violence in Assam, he stressed the need for stern law against infiltration. Swami Raghwanand and Moh.
