Comment Baba Ramdev’s mass appeal frightens Congress

IT has become quite apparent that the government is jittered by the mass appeal generated by Baba Ramdev and Anna Hazare. The scenario is becoming reminiscent of the emergency days when people of this country congregated in each and every city to protest against the high-handed rule of the erstwhile Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It can only be hoped that Sonia Gandhi – who de-facto runs the government – does not repeat the mistake of her mother-in-law and does not attempt to suppress the people’s movement. She would do well to remember that the oppressive tactics of Indira Gandhi inspired the entire political opposition to unite and the movement led by Mr Jayaprakash Narayan, culminated in the formation of the first non-congress government in India in the year 1977.

It won’t be an exaggeration to call the incumbent UPA government as the most corrupt one in the history of independent India; the amount of the embezzlement done by the various members of the government, is simply incalculable. Skeleton after skeleton is emerging out of the cupboard of this government headed by a puppet Prime Minister, who shamelessly is not ready to shoulder the responsibility for the misdeeds of his cabinet ministers and the other members of the government. The people of this country have been defrauded to the tune of more than Rs two lakh crores through the scams like CWG and 2G spectrum. And under the circumstances, if voices are being raised against such criminal acts, government is threatening to suppress such protests with an iron glove.

Swami Ramdev, for long has been demanding the enactment of Lokpal bill to deter the unscrupulous elements from indulging in corrupt practices and now – in the aftermath of these mega-scams—since the push has come to shove, alongside with his own followers and millions of those who want to eliminate corruption from this land, has come out openly to force the government to enact appropriate laws for the same. He has been demanding the repatriation of Rs four lakh crores stashed away in the Swiss banks and the other tax havens by the corrupt politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen of India.

Swami Ramdev with his impeccable track record of serving the masses of this nation, by any standards, seems to be the most appropriate and perfect man to lead the mass movement against corruption. And rattled by his mass appeal, all those who have factored in institutionalising the corruption and perpetuating the same, have come together and hence an orchestrated diatribe against him and an uncalled for police action against his peaceful Satyagrah in the Ramlila ground of Delhi.

Over the years, Swami Ramdev has been vociferously criticising some of the products marketed by the powerful multi-nationals in India. He has scientifically proved that soft drinks like Coke and Pepsi are big health hazards and has been advocating the consumption of natural health drinks and sherbets in place of the former. He painstakingly has been bringing to the notice of the public that excessive usage of the allopathic medicines cure one kind of ailment and in the process, create another. With the combination of the Yogic asanas, kriyas, pranayam and ayurvedic medicines and food supplements – he has been proving – most of the diseases can be prevented and cured also. The overwhelming majority of the population which cannot afford the expensive medical treatments, consider itself indebted to Swami Ramdev and people of his ilk for having guided them to the healthier way of life at no or negligible cost.

Swami Ramdev has been severely criticising the indiscriminate usage of fertilisers and pesticides which have been progressively rendering our land infertile and poisoning the food products, respectively; in place of the said harmful items, he has been advocating the consumption of organic manures.

The truth which is not meeting the public eye is that, those who have usurped the wealth of the nation and stashed it illegally in the foreign banks and the agents of those multinationals—which are dreaming of looting the unsuspecting and gullible common man of this nation by selling their harmful food items, pharmaceuticals, fertilisers and the pesticides— have joined hands and baying for Swami Ramdev’s blood. Now the onus is on the nationalist Indians to rise and thwart the nefarious designs of the enemies of this nation and consolidate the ranks of people like Swami Ramdev and Anna Hazare.

First phase of Swami Ramdev’s agitation which comprised of fasts by him and by his countless followers, is over. Now in the ensuing phase, he is going to exhort the people of this country – irrespective of the caste, creed, region and religion—to unite against the injustices which have been done to them by the corrupt rulers and will tour extensively throughout the country. As expected, the government, will not hesitate from using strong arm tactics – as it had ruthlessly used in the Ramlila ground recently – to down the morale of the protesting masses, but, as the history stands testimony to the fact, as always, people of this country will win the battle.
