Shri LK Avani spoke to Smt Sahna Devi, widow of the late Shri Amitabha Chatterjee on phone SHRI Amitabha Chatterjee, grandson of Shri Asutosh Mookerjee and nephew of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee passed away on 29 January 2010 at Kolkata. He was 81 years old. He was the son of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s youngest sister Mrs. Ramala Devi. According to the information made available by Justice Chittatosh Mookerjee, President, Asutosh Memorial Institute, Shri Amitabha Chatterjee had uniformaly brilliant educational career. He was educated at Mitra Institution Bhowanipur, Presidency College and Shibpur Government Engineering College. He stood fourth among the first ten in the Matriculation Examination of Calcutta University. He obtained first class in the B.E. (Electrical) Examination. He served as an Engineer in the D.V.C. He obtained French Government Scholarship and underwent training in France. He left D.V.C. and joined Indian Aluminum Co. and held several senior posts in the Company. He underwent managerial training for senior executives in Switzerland and Canada.

He was closely connected with many educational, cultural and Social Institutions. He had been for many years Secretary of Mitra Institution (the school where Syamaprasad Mookerjee had his initial education). He was the treasurer of Asutosh Mookerjee Memorial Institute (located at 77, Asutosh Mookerjee Road, ancestral home of Dr. Syamaprasad Mookerjee). He had helped to establish photo gallery museum of Syamaprasad Mookerjee. He was closely associated with the publication of the diary and papers of Dr. Syamaprasad Mookerjee. A number of RSS and BJP leaders and workers had interactions with him. He was in close contact with Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation and helped them obtain valuable material about Dr. Mookerjee.

A condolence meeting was held at the premises of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation, New Delhi where rich tributes were paid to the departed soul.

Shri Bal Apte, President of the Foundation (SPMRF) and National Vice President, BJP said that the nation has lost one of the brilliant and dedicated exponent of nationalism and an ardent devotee of the great heritage and ideological stream represented by Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Shri Kidar Nath Sahni, former Governor and former President, SPMRF described his meetings with Shri Amitabha Chatterjee during SPMRF seminars in Kolkata as most cordial and illuminating. Shri Tarun Vijay, Director SPMRF, said that he had the opportunity to meet late Shri Chatterjee many a time in his home and also in his office and every time we went there, he welcomed with warmth and friendliness offering all the help.
