THIS is a book on philosophy and postmodernism. The purpose of this essay, according to the author, is to change the metaphor, to examine it.

Postmodernism sometimes regards itself as a philosophy, at other times, as its enemy and sometimes it assumes both attitudes simultaneously. The author describes the difference between epistemology (the study of knowledge) and postmodernism, which is hostile to epistemology. Philosopher Charles Taylor points out that postmodernism is unfairly hostile to epistemology because it is only the name of a ‘problem area’, the area of human knowledge. The nature, capacity and extent of knowledge have always been thought to be open to philosophical enquiry. This book makes for a heavy reading.
