Saksham, a national organisation dedicated to the cause of visually challenged persons urged the President of India Smt Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to restart the Resource Teachers scheme that was closed by both the Central and state governments recently. In a memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister and President on October 5, the organisation demanded to declare the eyes as national property so that maximum number of visually challenged people can see this world. The memorandum also demanded that the chairman and members of the Handicapped Commission should only be handicapped persons and the handicapped should be granted six per cent reservation in the jobs of government and constitutional organisation as per their population. The physically challenged persons should be included in the proposed multipurpose identity card scheme launched for the people below poverty line and the physically challenged persons should be given priority in National Food Security Scheme.
