The National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad that met in Raipur from May 27 to 30 demanded the UPA government to establish an independent National Education Commission as soon as possible. Regarding the ragging in campuses, the Council said encouragement of constructive programmes amongst students and compulsory formation of students’ councils will be useful in stopping ragging in the Campuses.

Since ABVP is going to complete 60 years of its existence on July 9, it has decided to use this occasion as an opportunity to expand and strengthen the organisation all over the country. The National Council formulated a detailed strategy for this objective. A national committee was also formed to conduct the year-long drive. Besides all the ABVP leaders, prominent among those who were present at the meeting included RSS Sarsanghachalak Shri Mohan Bhagwat and Sahsarkaryavah Shri Suresh Soni. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh also attended the public reception held on May 29.

“For a long time it has been felt that the entire educational field should be reconstructed and new system be built. Ministry of HRD had appointed a committee to advice on renovation and rejuvenation of higher education under the chairmanship of Prof. Yashpal. The Prime Minister formed a Knowledge Commission before this. Both in their reports have recommended formation of National Education Commission. This is in a way acceptance to the long pending demand of ABVP. But a doubt has been created on acceptance of recommendations of both the commissions. NEC of ABVP demands that the doubts and contradictions between both the reports should be sorted out and the Commission be formed early,” said a resolution adopted at the meeting. The meeting also welcomed the Supreme Court decision to take legal action again those involved in recent fatal cases of ragging in Himachal Pradesh.

In another resolution the NEC reiterated its demand to the newly elected Central Government to fulfil its assurances given to safeguard national security and to erase out appeasement and social conflicts-type old tactics and establish a positive attitude towards making a strong nation.
