In a letter addressed to Union Surface Transport Minister T.R. Baalu, Rashtriya Yodha Smarak Samiti president Darshan Lal Jain demanded the naming of the Panipat flyover after Hemchand Vikramaditya.

In the letter he congratulated the Minister for providing a magnificent landmark on G.T. Road in Haryana and that too, six months ahead of the schedule. The flyover has been inaugurated, but it is yet to be given a name.

The letter said, ?It is common knowledge that the name of the Panipat city is historically linked with the three battles of Panipat. Out of the three battles the 2nd & 3rd battles were very important, since they changed the course of our history. The 2nd battle was more significant as the same was fought between Mughal invader Akbar and a Haryana warrior Hemchand, commonly known as Hemu.

It is also on record that Hemchand Vikramaditya started his career as a businessman at Rewari and by dint of his courage, integrity, military strategy and fighting skills rose to the position of a Samrat. He was coronated as ?Samrat Hemchand Vikramaditya? at Purana Quila of Delhi on October 7, 1556. In his life, he fought 22 battles and won all of them. In 20 battles, he defeated the Afghans from Assam to Gwalior and in the last 2 battles he made Akbar flee from Agra and then from Delhi. History speaks that Akbar, who was 14 years old at that time, had made up his mind to go back to his native place Kabul but his guardian Bairam Khan persuaded him to take another chance to capture the throne of Delhi. They were forcefully resisted by the gallant fighter Hemchand Vikramaditya at Panipat. Hemchand was winning the battle but, to the misfortune of the country, an arrow pierced deep into his eye and he became unconscious. He was brought before Akbar who beheaded him to earn the title of Ghazi. His head was taken to Kabul, and the trunk was gibbeted at Purana Quila of Delhi. The sanskar of the remains of his body was done at village Saudapur near Panipat, where his samadhi still exists.

It will be a befitting homage to the Great Hero of Haryana, if the flyover is named as ?Hemchand Vikramaditya Setu? in his memory.

We hope, you will kindly give a positive response to our suggestion and give this historical gift to the people of Haryana.?
