Under Saddam they lived happily and in relative peace. But the Americans? presence has driven them out. The Christians in Iraq are fleeing their native land because they have become the targets for the Iraqis thirsting for revenge against the invaders. Christians formed about four per cent (nearly a million) of the Iraqi population. But since December 2003, 44 per cent of the asylum seekers from Iraq have been Christians. Though all the communities like Kurds and Arabs have also been targeted, the Christians have been most vulnerable as they were relatively better off than other communities. These people blame the British and American troops for not doing enough to protect the Christians. With thousands leaving Iraq and the elders not wanting their children to grow up there, it is said that in 20 years time, there will be no Christians in Iraq.
