First national convention of Rashtriya Sampadak Parishad was organised in Bhopal on November 30. About 100 delegates from Delhi, Haryana, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh, West Begal, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Karnataka participated in the convention. Speaking at the inaugural session, Shri Balbir Punj, senior journalist and MP, said the editors were falling prey to the undue pressure of management and market because 80 per cent of the total revenue of a newspaper now came from advertisements. Shri Chandan Mitra, editor, The Pioneer, criticised the media for indulging in unwanted acts. Shri Muzaffar Hussain, senior journalist, said the government was in the process of imposing a tax on newspapers, which would make difficult for small newspapers to survive. Shri Achyutanand Mishra, director general of Makhanlal Chaturvedi Patrakarita University, expressed concern over the growing infiltration of English words into Indian languages and appealed to readers to oppose the trend. Shri Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, announced to set up a university in the state to develop nationalist students and intellectuals.
