Shri Asim Kumar Mitra, noted journalist of Kolkata, has been honoured with this year'sN.B. Lele award. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Rashtriya Patrakarita Kalyan Nyas held in Delhi recently. The meeting was presided over by Dr N.M. Ghatate, chairman of the Nyas. The award, which consist of a cheque of Rs 51,000, a citation and a memento, will be presented at a function to be held in Mumbai on August 8.

Before Shri Mitra, this award has been presented to noted journalists Shri Narayanrao Tarte and Shri Ramashankar Agnihotri by former Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee. Last year the award was presented to noted Gujarati journalist, Shri Bachchubhai Thakkar in Ahmedabad.

Shri Mitra had started his career in journalism from Hindushtan Samachar in 1962 from Kolkata. Later he worked with Bangla daily Jugantar and Aajkal on different posts. He retired as senior sub-editor from Jugantar in 1999. Shri Mitra has also been associated with Shri Mitra Palekar award implementation committee, newsprint advisory committee, central press accreditation committee, Press Council of India and film censor board. He has been honoured with various awards. Shri Mitra has also authored four books in Bangla.

Besides Shri Mitra, Smt. Nila Sawant, assistant editor of Maharashtra Times, will be honoured with a woman award, which consists of Rs 25,000. Senior photo-journalist of Mumbai, Shri Mohan D. Bane will be honoured with a cash award of Rs 21,000. Another award of Rs 25,000 will be given jointly to Shri Uttam Malla of Tarun Bharat (Mumbai) and Shri Dilip Kanji of Dainik Samana.
