Symposium on female foeticide by Adhivakta Parishad

Delhi unit of Adhivakta Parishad organised a symposium on female foeticide recently. Inaugurating the symposium, Justice Ruma Paul, sitting judge of Supreme Court, emphasised the role of legal fraternity in curbing the growing social menace of female foeticide. The symposium emphasised the growing need of awareness and effective implementation of strategies needed to check the heinous and brutal offence.
Shri Rajesh Gogna, general secretary of Adhivakta Parishad, Delhi, said that consumerism was the main reason behind the anti-social act and merely enactment of law could not change the practice. ?Without going into depth of this evil, the society cannot get rid of it,? he added. Shri Chandan Mitra, editor, The Pioneer, explained different dimensions of the problem and said that all sections of the society should join hands together to find out a workable solution to the problem.
Justice Manju Goel, sitting High Court judge, also addressed the gathering and said that the legal fraternity needed to play a key role in this direction. She said that doctors, lawyers, government and NGOs should have a definite role to play in finding a solution to the problem. She further said that the society could not just sit and watch the brutal murder of coming generation of females.
Smt. Shailja Chandra, chairperson of Public Grievance Commission, supported the view of Justice Manju Goel and said that registration of preganancy should be notified under the law and there was a need to involve political, cultural and legal support to evolve a solution to the problem. The symposium was attended by lawyers, medicos, judges, law students and social activists. (FOC)
