The women activists of BJP staged a dharna at Jantar-Manter in New Delhi on July 2 and demanded justice to Imarana under the Indian Constitution. Addressing the participants, Smt. Karuna Shukla, president, BJP Mahila Morcha, wondered why Imarana, even after being raped by her father-in-law, was not being allowed to stay with her husband due to the fatwa issued by Deoband. She also questioned the silence of the UPA government on the fatwa. ?What is more shameful is that Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, is supporting the fatwa. It must be condemned in strongest words,? she said, adding that the rapist father-in-law should be punished under the Indian Criminal law.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Harsh Vardhan, Delhi BJP president said that once again the Imarana case kicked the debate for a Common Civil Code in the country. ?The Imarana episode also proved that the ?Personal Laws? need immediate and essential amendment. Smt. Mira Kanwaria, general secretary of the Mahila Morcha, said that Imarana episode was not just a religious matter; it was related to human sentiments, self-respect of a woman, human right and justice towards women.

In her speech, Smt. Shahin Akhtar, member BJP Mahila Morcha, came down heavily on Muslim clerics and termed them jalim and not aalim. She said if modern education was imparted in madarsas, the Ulemas would not have issued such a irresponsible fatwa.
