A local court in Delhi on June 8 refused to bail 62 activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who were arrested on June 7 for demonstrating and vandalising at the Vigyan Bhavan. The activists were protesting against the proceedings of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), convened to discuss the draft National Curriculum Framework.

Metropolitan Magistrate, Siddharth Sharma remanded them to judicial custody till June 22. Earlier, the police had opposed their bail applications, submitting that the activists had destroyed and damaged antique paintings, plants, tables, sofas and crockery and caused losses worth crores of rupees. Photographs of the damaged articles were shown to the court. The ABVP filed another bail application in the Session Court on June 9, which is scheduled for hearing on June 10.

Shri Nakul Bhardwaj, state secretary of ABVP and former DUSU president, and Shri Sundar Dagar, former vice president, are among the senior students who were arrested. The police had, however, released all the seven girls who were arrested along with other students the same night. The police have framed charges against the students under eight different sections.

The denial of bail has led to massive demonstrations and court arrest by ABVP activists across the country. There are reports of agitation by students in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Talking to Organiser in New Delhi Shri Ramesh Pappa, Uttar Kshetra organising secretary of ABVP, said that the UPA government by politicising the issue of education was playing with the future of lakhs of students in the country. He further said that the UPA government had never been serious on the issue of education and the ABVP would continue to fight for the cause of students.
