Veteran BJP leader Shri Pyarelal Khandelwal has turned 76. His admirers and well wishers have decided to celebrate his Amrit Mahotsav on a grand scale so that new generation can derive inspiration from his dedicated life.

A grand function will be organised under the banner of Shri Pyarelal Khandelwal Amrit Mahotsva Samaroh Samiti on May 22 at Bhopal. Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, former Union HRD Minister will be the chief guest on the occasion. Shri Suresh Soni, Sahsarkaryavah of RSS will be the chief speaker. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Babulal Gaur will preside over the function. Swami Divyanand Tirth, Shankaracharya of Bhanpura Peeth, Shri Vankaiah Naidu, vice president, BJP, Shri Sanjay Joshi, BJP general secretary (organisation), Sadhvi Umashri Bharti, former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat and Sadhvi Ritambhara, are also expected to participate in the function.

Born on April 6, 1929 at Charmandali village in Sihor district of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Khandelwal received education up to senior secondary level. He became a Sangh Swayamsevak in 1940 and by participating in different agitational activities, he became Sangh Pracharak in 1948. Since then he has not looked back and is a Sangh Pracharak now. He participated in the satyagraha movement launched against the imposition of ban on RSS, in Ratlam and Indore. He was jailed along with Shri Eknath Ranade. He was arrested during the Kashmir satyagraha and was sentenced to five months jail in 1953. In 1964 he joined the Jan Sangh and was given the responsibility of Sambhag secretary. Later, in 1972 he became the state organising secretary. During Emergency Shri Khandelwal organised the struggle against the Emergency from 1975 to 1977. The Madhya Pradesh government had announced an award for his arrest. Meanwhile, he was appointed the convener of the Lok Sangharsh Samiti, founded by Jai Prakash Narayan. After the Emergency, he was appointed the state general secretary of Janata Party and later of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He represented Madhya Pradesh in Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1986. In 1987 he launched a successful agitation for alleviation the problems of farmers and staged a fast unto death for seven days in front of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly. He was elected to Lok Sabha from Raigarh constituency in 1989. He was incharge of the Haryana unit of the party in 1993, of Orissa in 1996, of Uttar Pradesh in 2000 and incharge of Assam, West Bengal and north-eastern states in 2002. He was again elected to Rajya Sabha in 2004. Presently Shri Khandelwal is a senior member of the BJP national executive. He was appointed the party'svice president in 2000 and again in 2003.
