The Jammu-Udhampur rail link was originally scheduled to be inaugurated on March 25, 2004 but it could not be done because of the announcement of Lok Sabha polls and the Model Code of Conduct.

The already much delayed inauguration of Rs. 510 Crore Jammu-Udhampur Railway line project has again been postponed although earlier it was given that Prime Minister during his Jammu visit will flag off the inaugural train from Jammu to Udhampur.

The Jammu-Udhampur rail link was originally scheduled to be inaugurated on March 25, 2004 but it could not be done so because of the announcement of Lok Sabha polls and the Model Code of conduct.

It is said that all was set for commissioning the project out for to availability of VVIP to do the job. Trial runs of the trains have been completed and the staff posted at half a dozen Railway Stations along 53 Km. long railway track. In addition to this large number of security men have been deployed costing huge sums.

One estimate put the overall losses due to six months delay in the inaugural function at over Rs. 50 crores.
